How to Add a PayPal Button to Your Website

Are you looking for a way to easily accept payments on your eCommerce website? Do you want to create a PayPal button so that your customers have a way to purchase with any card? If so, then you need to learn all that you can about how to easily add a PayPal button to your site.

Doing so can open a whole new wave of business for your brand. Instead of having certain cards you can accept, PayPal makes it possible for you to accept any payment method they have.

See below for a step-by-step guide on how to add a PayPal button to your website right away.

1. Create the Button

Don’t worry, this isn’t as complex as the title might seem. You won’t actually have to create a button from scratch; more or less just customize it how you wish from a variety of options.

First things first, you’ll need to sign in to your PayPal account. If you don’t have one, you need to create one; this will be how you receive payments from the button you install on your site.

Once you’re logged in, click on the “Merchant Services” option that you’ll find on the drop-down menu. It’s the hamburger logo, for those of you using the PayPal app on your phone.

Locate the “Create Payment Buttons” for your website link, then “Create Buttons.” After you click on that, there will be a list of fields that will show up for you to input, so be sure to consider them carefully.

We recommend that, before entering anything, you scroll down and read through all of the options and all of the buttons on the page. This will give you a more concise idea.

You can also visit the purchasing page of your favorite online shops for inspiration. That way, you can create a PayPal button in their likeness.

2. Enter in the Details

Now that you have an idea of the type of button you wish to create, you simply need to enter the open fields on the “Create Button” page.

First, choose the type of button that you’re looking for. You can either customize the message on your button or simply leave it as “Buy Now”. PayPal has a setting that allows you to preview how it will look from your customers’ point of view.

There are a few fields that might seem confusing, so we’ve provided more detail on them below:

  • Item Name: The name of the product or service that you’re selling (using the button you’re creating)
  • Item ID: ID number for tracking purposes; you can also use the product’s SKU number if you’d like.
  • Customize Button Options: This allows you to create a drop-down to specify details of the product they’re purchasing (For example: providing sizes like XS, S, M, L, and XL drop-downs for a shirt).
  • Tax: You’ll enter the state that you’re in, as well as the state tax that needs to be applied to the purchase.

All of the other fields are pretty self-explanatory, such as “Price”, “Shipping”, and “Currency”. We think you can handle those! Once you fill in all those fields, you’re that much closer to having a PayPal button for your beautiful web design.

    3. Leave Track Inventory Blank

After you’ve entered in all of the fields, you will be able to see the preview of your button. You can make any revisions as you’d like.

Once you click on the next page, you’ll see an option to “Track Inventory”. We recommend leaving this blank unless, for some reason, you wish to create a new button for every new product that you create.

Simply click to the next page, “Customize Advanced Features” to leave the option blank and move on with the process.

    4. Add Custom Features (if You’d Like)

Here’s our advice: the more customized that your Paypal button is, the more convenient your customer’s purchasing experience will be. This will prevent them from backing out at the point of purchase.

The goal should also be to collect as much information about your customer as you can. That way, they go from being a one-time customer to a client you can pitch new products to.

Think of adding things such as a “Quantity” field, so that customers can specify how many of one product that they’d like to buy. You definitely want to include this, as it’s unlikely they’d go through the entire purchasing process again, even if they were interested in buying more than one.

We also recommend that you add a shipping address field so that you know exactly where the customer wants you to ship the product.

    5. Create or Edit

Once you have entered in all of the correct fields and gotten the customizations the way you wanted them, there’s only one thing left to do: click the “Create Button Now” option.

If you realize there was something you wanted to tweak about your PayPal button after the fact, then don’t worry, you can edit it at any time.

Be sure to make a routine out of checking your PayPal account for payments, updates to the software, and so forth.
